I got my first Swiss Army knife in 1987 after graduating from Basic Training at Ft Polk LA.
It was a Champion,the forerunner to today's SwissChamp.I carried and used that knife throughout my time in the Army Reserves and on active duty for over 4 and a half years.
No matter what the task my Champion met the demands placed upon it with no muss or fuss.
The knife looks far from new today,but it is just as serviceable as the day I took it out of the package almost 20 years ago.The knife is now a prized posession of my 10year old son.
I strayed away from SAK's when the Multiplier fad hit,until a few years ago I made an impulse purchase of a new SwissChamp that was on sale at Lowes. I remembered how useful my Champion was and was struck by nostalgia.I also figured it was a good item to back up my Leatherman that I carried with me.
At first my SwissChamp rode in the cupboard of my SemiTruck that I drove while working as a long haul driver for a large trailerload carrier.Then I started carrying it on days when I did not feel the need for a Pliers based tool.The more I carried it and used it the more I remembered how useful an SAK can be.
The next thing I know my Tactical knives and Leatherman were replaced by a Swisstool X, and One Hand Trekker,and various other SAK's.
As I said earlier I drive a truck for a living,first over the road for almost 3 years and now as a line haul driver for over a year and a half.There is a saying in trucking that goes "When your wheels arent turnin,your not earnin'. Waiting around for a breakdown service isnt productive when it is something that you can do yourself. My SAK's have allowed me to do so on many occasions.
I have nothing against Tactical knives or other quality Multi tools. If you are someone who is reading this and contemplating the purchase of your first SAK go ahead and buy it.
Carry it along with your current knife or tool of choice. If you have thought out your tool requirements carefully you will soon find that you are reaching for your SAK more than the knife/tool you normally carry.
The majority of the products from Victorinox and Wenger are quite affordable, even to someone on a limited budget. If you lose your SAK,you sure wont feel as bad as you would if you lose or wreck a $100 plus Tactical. Hope this helps you the reader make a decision.
