When I was just a boy my grandfather would take me fishing every weekend. I never knew my father so these fishing trips were a very important part of my life. One of the memories I have is that every time I would get the line tangled or "all fouled up" as he would say, he would pull out his Swiss Army knife and fix the problem. Truth is he used this knife for a multitude of things.
When I turned eight he gave me a Swiss army knife of my own. Mine didn't have all the tools Grandpa's did but it was mine. Sadly, I don't know what model it was. Two years to the day later I was trying to fix my fouled up fishing line like I had seen grandpa do a hundred times and I dropped it to the bottom of the lake....
Years later after my grandfather had passed on I had the opportunity to meet and subsequently get to know my father. We were inseperable for several years until business required his relocation to another state. In our last meeting before he moved away he reached in his pocket and pulled out a Swiss Army knife, a Scientist, He handed it to me and told me a story. He said that my grandfather had given him his first Swiss army knife just before he married my mother. He said he still had it in his sock drawer. He said he had always had fond memories of my grandfather each time he saw that knife. As a single tear rolled down his cheek he said I hope you think the same of me when you use this one.
My father passed away in 1997. I never saw him after that last meeting, but I carry that Scientist still today. I recently bought Swiss Champs for my kids 5 and 8 years old. They're only allowed to hold them sitting with mom or I. I didn't tell them this story, but one day I will.
