My Swiss Army Knife Story:
Since an early age I have enjoyed camping and being outdoors. My father gave me my first Swiss Army Knife when I was 8 years old. That knife has now been with me 39 years and recently in February 2007 proved as invaluable as ever. A few buddies and I take an annual week long snowmobile trip to Wyoming.
On our last trip one of my friends wrecked his sled into a tree after dropping off into a small ravine. Luckily there was very little damage to him or his sled, however a branch broke off and went through the cowling of the machine and wedged into the open clutch system. A 2 inch thick piece of branch was jammed in such a way that trying to break it out of where it wedged wasn’t an option without damaging the clutch or the sled. Out came my Swiss Army knife and its little saw. We could just reach into the area where the branch was and make little strokes to cut it apart.
After about an hour we succeeded in removing the branch and finally were able to dig the sled out and get it running so we could make it back to our cabin before dark.
The entire time we spent on our “woodworking project” there were white out conditions which, without my Swiss Army knife saw blade, would have been forced us to leave the sled until the next day. During the almost two hour dig out 10 inches of snow fell. We were at least fifteen miles away from our cabin and riding with another person through deep snow is not something to do if it can be avoided. Where we ride is rugged to say the least and riding well off trail is normal. When the mishap occurred we were in an area that no one even remotely would have come by much less with any type of saw. My little Swiss Army knife saw worked where everyone else’s multi-tools couldn’t. I have always had a few SAK’s floating around my shop, tool boxes and in my pocket. They always provide superior service and the quality construction does not fail with everyday use.
There are many fancy, expensive knives and multi-tools around but frequently people ask to borrow my knife because it has multi-tool usefulness with a compact size.
