My Swiss Army Knife Story:
I received my first Swiss Army knife as a “coming of age” present for my thirteenth birthday: a pink Classic SD. It was, my aunt explained, symbolic of how, in becoming more independent, I would have to take care of myself more—and so needed to be well-equipped to do so. Heading off on my first camping trip that summer, I certainly put my new knife to good use, cutting off branches, whittling wood, and removing the resulting splinters.
What surprised me was how I could continue to put my knife to use even after I returned to my less wild suburban lifestyle. I never left home without it; and, after it was confiscated while I was traveling abroad, immediately bought a new one. This time, however, I upgraded to a Rambler, and became even more dependent on my knife.
I now live in New York City, and my Swiss Army knife continues to be an integral part of my life. I carry it on my keychain, and keep it with me at all times. My friends may laugh at me for holding onto seeming camping gear in such an urban setting, but they are the same ones asking to borrow it when they need it. Even as a school teacher, I constantly rely on my knife—using it for anything from opening an envelope, fixing a loose screw in my classroom, or removing a splinter for one of my students. Friends and coworkers alike are always surprised (and impressed) when I’m able to whip out my handy little Swiss Army knife to get them out of a jam.
I recently lost my knife when it fell off my keychain, and faltered for the few weeks I was without it. What an invaluable tool!
