My Swiss Army Knife Story:

I was a Boy Scout during the days when carrying a pocket knife to school was common place. Of course I also recall the 23rd Psalm being read in the classroom and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. That was 40 some years ago. I’ve carried a pocket knife ever since. My grandfather was a Swiss watchmaker and I think after one too many trips through the washing machine, I was given a stainless steel Swiss Army knife - probably the equivalent of the “Spartan”. It stood up incredibly well. Even though it was classic red, I suspect I lost a few along the way. The last knife I purchased was a “Tinker”. It had about the same feel as what I had been carrying, but I was heading off to Israel to take a summer class in field archeology and a Phillips head screwdriver seemed way more useful than a corkscrew. It was useful that summer and I’ve used it regularly on computer gear or to open a package at work, and Habitat for Humanity and around the house weekends. It’s the only knife I own. I couldn’t even guess how many extra trips down and back up a ladder it’s saved me. After 25 years of carrying that Swiss Army knife, I gave it up 2 weeks ago. I feel almost naked without a knife in my pocket so I never even think about it. After waiting in a rather long queue at the airport I saw a sign just as I got to the front of the line outlining contraband items. I was pretty much committed to my flight so I just handed over my Swiss Army knife. I think I probably reached for it 3 or 4 times while I was away- and I’ll admit I muttered a bit each time (mostly at myself). Truth be told, the toothpick and tweezers were long gone, and after 25 years of almost daily use and a few trips through the laundry it was a bit banged up.

So on the first work day back home, I ordered a replacement “Tinker”. For a handy-guy and sometimes I/T person it’s really the perfect balance between size and functionality when a toolbox isn’t handy. Just a few more days of feeling naked…
