When I was about 10, my Dad gave me a SAK - well, it was a knock off, but I didn't know that! It's red and has a bunch of functions. I've always had it with me, but never really used it, unless we went camping. Then there was the phase I went through when I thought I could whittle a kachina doll! He had me practice skinning the outside of a branch to get to the wood inside - just in case I ever needed to know! He and my grandfather ALWAYS carried a pocket knife, so it seemed normal to me! (Now I'm actually expanding my collection - 1 Victorinox and 1 Wenger, so far.)
