| | | Swiss Army Knife Story for Pocket Pal:
I was fishing at Kinzu Dam in Pennsylvania. The place is known for quick rises in water levels.
It was three years ago spring, during trout season. My hook was set in a nice rainbow trout. Man it was nice. It even jumped once. Then all of a sudden something grabbed the trout and proceeded to run up stream. I only had six pound test so I loosened the drag. It looked like a log, but when the tail splashed it looked like a canoe paddle. I got carried away and forgot safety. As I had chest waders on I worked my way further out into the stream.
What a fight! For fifteen minutes I fought to see if I could land the fish. Then it happened. I went over my head in cold water. As I am over fifty years old the cold water was quite a shock.
Trying to hold on to the penn reel made no sense at that point. To hell with it! My wades filled up quickly especially with wool clothes. The suction held the waders on tightly as I gasped for air and tried to keep my head to survive. Then I remember what my dad had told me when when I worked on the Mississippi River. Always carry a sharp dependable knife on you so you may cut your way out of danger. My choice was your swiss pocket pal.
Reaching into my pocket as my wader was below my waist I found my salvation. The pocket pal enabled me to open the waders in time . Man what an experience !! With a few minor cuts to my legs it was well worth it.
