My Swiss Army Knife Story:
Shoot. I use my old Swiss Army Victorinox Mechanic every day in the office and at home. It is one of the older, slimmer Mechanic models with a couple of less tools sold many years ago under the Techline series of equipment
from Radio Shack. It may be a collector's item now, but it is pretty beat up. It gets even more use in the field. I am an aircraft accident investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board and have used this Swiss Army knife's tools to remove pilot's instruments from a cockpit of a crashed Boeing 737 in a remote part of Alaska, opened cans of Spam on a mountain top in Afghanistan when the little key thing on the Spam cans failed me miserably, cut light wiring to remove parts from airplanes several times,
etc. The Swiss Army Mechanic is a great knife. As an aside, I never have found much of a use for the Swiss Army knife corkscrew. Must be a European thing or something. Ha!

Swiss Army Knife Story by Tony:
Throughout the 1960's, my Dad would take my brothers and I fishing and crabbing for an entire week in Seaside Heights, New Jersey. This was our only vacation each year and the only time my Dad would take time off from work.
Fishing with him - and just being with him - was such a huge treat that we always looked forward to each and every year. As soon as we would jump back in the car and head back home, we would immediately rehash/relive the prior week's events. Stuff like: who caught the biggest fish, who caught the biggest crab, who ate the most hot dogs, ice cream, burgers, and etc. At the same time we would look forward to next year and imagine how much bigger and better it would be. That is until 1968! This was the summer that would never and could never be topped.
While we were fishing/crabbing off our newly found favorite spot (the Seaside Heights Bridge), my brother accidentally dropped my Dad's swiss army knife over the railing. This was THE swiss army knife that my Dad always took with him to work in construction, on all side jobs and he always left it on the kitchen counter right next to his keys. And before the knife even hit the water, my Dad dove off that bridge - 30 feet high - into the water. It was amazing! 30 feet when you're 9 years old is like 300 feet. It was just as if he jumped off the highest bridge in the entire world - even higher than the George Washington Bridge! It was just like watching a Tarzan movie. Just like that - BANG - my Dad, our Dad, just dove off that bridge. It was like slow motion. He gracefully and mightily sailed in the air, hanging there in midair and in perfect form.
Then, after what seemed like an eternity, gravity returned and he disappeared into the water. We anxiously stared below. Nervous not because we were worried about our Dad, but because we were worried - REALLY WORRIED - that he might not find his swiss army knife. That would break his heart! But we didn't worry for long because suddenly my Dad's head popped up and he instantly shouted "Hey, what are you looking at! Quick, pull up the baskets and check those lines. We have fish to catch!" That was our Dad! He had recovered his knife.
We told that story for hours on end those last four days of that week. Then we told it several times a day - each and every day - for the remainder of that summer! And then at least once a day for many years after that. Our Dad was always our hero. But after that he was bigger than Tarzan. Yet, our Dad didn't see what all the fuss was about. "You never lose your swiss army knife" is what he always said after that. And that was exactly what our uncles all said every time we told them the story. FYI - the day after we returned back home, our Dad attached a large cork to his trusted swiss army knife and then he did the same for his brothers days later.
When my Dad passed, we decided that we would "share" his swiss army knife. Every Christmas, we retell this amazing true story to our Dad's grandchildren, our kids, pass it around the room and show everyone "the knife". Then we hand it over, or bestow it, to "the caretaker" for the upcoming year.
While we will always miss our Dad, we always cherish his memory. And we will NEVER lose his swiss army knife.
