Special thanks to retired LAPD police officer Jimmy Brousseau for submitting one of the best Swiss Army knife stories!
My name is Jimmy Brousseau. I am now retired from the Los Angeles Police Department. However, before I went to LAPD, I had also worked on a Rescue Ambulance for 4 1/2 years. I have been carrying various Swiss Army Knives in the field for more than 25 years, primarily my small "Officer Suisse" pocketknife and my Victorinox Multi-Tool. I have used both knives countless times in the field over the years. The two most memorable experiences I have had, using a Swiss Army Knife, is when I had to use my "Officer Suisse" pocket knife to cut away seatbelts for the inside of a mini-school bus which was struck by a train in Elmont, CA. Many died but we were able to save two. I used my knife to cut away seatbelts to extract the victims. Your knife worked great.

Another memorable event I can recall is when I used my Swiss Army knife along with a pair of trauma scissors to cut away the clothing of my partner who had been shot by a "Gang-Banger" in Hollenbeck Division. This occurred back in the early 90's. We were working Motors (motorcycle enforcement) and as my buddy drove past the Housing Projects in Hollenbeck Division near 4th and Gless streets, at about 2 am, a shot rang out and my buddy went down. He was laying face down on the 5 Freeway overpass, his motor was tipped over on the street and he had a through-and-through gunshot wound, which entered just above his right rear trousers pocket (Motor-breeches). The bullet exited out from his front left hip area.

As I approached, he was yelling, "I've been shot! - I have been shot! - I've been shot!" and he said it was "Burning"! I saw the entrance wound but needed to cut his clothes away and find the exit wound so that I could control his bleeding. As I cut his uniform away, I found the round, which had traveled through my partner's body, it had exited his body and was wedged into the inside of his "Sam Brown" (weapon holster), and it was 9mm, Ball Ammo.

I re-assured my buddy and told him, "Hang in there Greg, you going to be OK". I applied direct pressure to his bleeding wounds and put out a "Help-Call”, a requested an RA (Rescue Ambulance.), K-Nine unit, Metro, SWAT and an Air-Ship. Greg, after a lengthy and difficult recovery, had returned to the field and his only permanent damage is his need to wear a brace on his boot to hold his left foot up. Greg is a tough Guy and a great Cop. He returned to the field in an amazedly short period and is know a Watch Commander over LAPD Motors Officers. We joke about that night now but it sure was very funny back, when it happened. Greg is going to be just fine.

He is one of those guys, who is like that football player who takes a big hit and from the side-lines is telling the coach "Put me in Coach, I'm Ok", That’s Greg, he is a great Cop. and a real man. I am glad we did not loose him that night and my knife helped me. I do not go anywhere without a Victorinox knife. My only regret is that I wasn’t working the night that ‘Danny” Daniel A. Pratt was killed in 77th Division. He died as a result of gunshot wound to the head. He took one right between horns, not much one could do in that situation but I sure wish I was their. It occurred on my B-day, in 1988. As I type this, I am wearing a “Daniel A. Pratt” Memorial Band and I have not taken it of in twenty years.

I love all the cops and it is always tough losing one. We lost a lot of great cops in the late 80’ and early 90’. All Los Angeles Police Officers should have and use your knives. If I had the money I would by them all one, All 9000 of them! Moreover, It would be great if Victorinox produced a stainless steel memorial band for fallen officers, I know I would buy one, Thanks for this opportunity. Yours in Christ, May God bless All of You at Victorinox.

J. Brousseau, LAPD – Retired
